The days of influence via suits and brass name plates are behind us.

There was a time when executive presence meant the suit, the title, the corner office. You looked the part, you played the part, and that was enough. These outdated ideals no longer align with the diverse leaders who are required to navigate these rapid and ever-changing conditions we find ourselves in today. What’s landing for me now is this: executive presence isn’t about how you polished you are, it’s about how real you’re willing to be. The leaders who are actually moving things forward right now aren’t trying to have all the answers. They’re building environments where people feel safe to bring their lived experience, their ideas, their perspectives, their whole selves to work. That’s where the magic happens.

Executive presence is about having real, brave, and vulnerable conversations with the people who ultimately will bring your vision to life. Therefore, you as the leader must involve your people in the creation of the processes and results from the start so they can understand not just where you’re going, but how they’re part of getting there. For me, this connects right back to values- driven leadership:

Executive presence isn’t about being in charge. It’s about how you support and empower the people in your charge. Especially right now, when things feel fast, messy, and constantly changing, this leadership actually sticks. Remember, at the end of the day, your suit might get you in the door… but how you show up keeps you there.
