Guardians in Training: Growing Future Stewards Through Connection, Mentorship, and Leadership

Leadership does not begin with a title.

It begins by creating the conditions where people feel safe enough to show up, connected enough to belong, and supported enough to discover what they are capable of.

Before people can step into leadership, they need safety and security. They need to know they are valued, respected, and welcomed. From that foundation, a spirit of community can grow — a sense of connection, trust, and shared responsibility.

This is where leadership begins.

The Guardians in Training (G.I.T.) program is rooted in this belief: that when young people feel connected to their community, their culture, their land, and each other, they begin to recognize the important role they have in shaping the future.

Through my work with Lodgepole Leadership Consulting, I have had the privilege of supporting the development of the Guardian in Training framework alongside ʔaq̓am, helping create opportunities for youth to explore leadership, stewardship, mentorship, and meaningful pathways connected to community and land.

The work does not end when the program ends.

The true measure of leadership development is not simply what someone learns in the moment — it is how they carry that learning forward into their relationships, their community, and their responsibilities.

The next generation of Guardians are already here. Our role is to create the conditions where they can recognize their strengths, build confidence, connect with their purpose, and step into meaningful opportunities to serve their communities.

When we invest in young people, we are not only supporting individual growth — we are strengthening the relationships, knowledge, and connections that sustain communities for generations to come.
