Leadership is not about power.

Pink Shirt Day reminds us that leadership is not about power, it’s about protection. At its core, Pink Shirt Day began as a simple act of courage by two students who stood up against bullying. Not with aggression. Not with authority. But with solidarity. That is values-driven leadership. Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge. In every organization I’ve worked in, the greatest impact has never come from hierarchy, but from the people who are on the ground making the magic happen. Impact requires leaders who are first and foremost responsible for how they show up every. single. day. Impact also requires leaders who create spaces where people feel safe enough to learn, grow, fail, and try again. Last summer, I asked my summer camp Team Leads to step fully into that space. To close the say–do gap. To ensure their authority never outweighed their responsibility to protect the people in their charge. And they did. I watched these camp supervisors model values-driven leadership in real time. They chose inclusion over ego. Accountability over avoidance. Care over control. They created psychological safety for youth and for one another. I have never been more proud. Bullying in the workplace doesn’t always look like the schoolyard, it can look like: Exclusion. Silence. Dismissal. Power used without accountability. Values-driven leaders don’t ignore those moments. They step toward them. They model psychological safety. They interrupt harm. They build systems rooted in dignity, equity, and belonging. Especially in environments serving youth, communities, and diverse voices, we carry an even greater responsibility. The cultures we tolerate are the cultures we teach. Pink Shirt Day is a reminder that leadership is a call to action, not just a title. Hashtags without action are not only incongruent, they are harmful. If we are truly called to lead, then we are called to protect. Not just reputations. Not just outcomes. But people. That is values-driven leadership. As I step into my next chapter, I remain deeply committed to building and supporting cultures where courage, care, and accountability are not aspirational, but operational. If you are doing this work too, (or want to) I’d welcome the conversation. #PinkShirtDay #ValuesDrivenLeadership #LeadershipWithCourage #PsychologicalSafety #WalkTheWalk #NextChapter
